If you are suffering from a panic disorder most likely you will be having bouts of complete and total uneasiness. Your body may shake, you may feel as if the temperature has been turned way up over 90 degrees in the room or you may feel as if you are being judged by others. It’s normal to feel some of these symptoms, after all we wouldn’t be human unless we had our natural “fight or flight” response which allows us in situations we feel endangered to actually remove ourselves from the situation or completely fight for our own survival. However those of us suffering from panic disorder are actually feeling these symptoms in regular situations whether they be social settings, wide open spaces or other situations. Overcoming Panic is certainly possible and many have done it through the use of programs, meditation, medication and simple therapy.
Some people’s situation is a new condition that they are just now experiencing and may benefit from books or CDs and they are capable of helping themselves. Others need help overcoming panic by seeking the help of a doctor or a medical professional to see true results. When you have tried many things and there is no solution for your problem it may mean that you are using a broken tool to fix a problem that exists within that tool. How do you get a nail out of the handle of a hammer? Certainly you cannot use the same hammer to do this. Though many people who suffer with panic disorder have control issues that make them feel as if they are the only one to ever deal with this. However, this is not the case. Millions of people worldwide have stories of overcoming panic and anxiety disorders but you need to follow a few steps:
- Self- Assessment: Do I need outside help or have I just suffered my first attack. While professional help sometimes helps those who are capable of helping themselves and have not suffered from the long-term effects of the disorder will benefit most from self help material found online or in bookstores.
- Acceptance: This may be harder for some men to swallow than it is for women because society expects a man to be strong and panic could be perceived as a sign of weakness by some, but that is far from the truth. The quicker you swallow your own pride and accept that this is a common disorder that people deal with privately for years you will then be able to help yourself.
- Relief: This is only felt after you have completed all of the steps prior to relief. Overcoming anxiety is actually something that is doable, but don’t expect miracles overnight as that tends to be our issue. Whether your panic is the result of years of pent-up frustration or is simply the onset of symptoms it’s important to know that there is relief out there. No matter how long it takes to find what it is you are looking for, never stop trying.
Overcoming panic is far from simple. For me it took years to be rid of most of my symptoms of social phobia and my symptoms of shaking and voice trembling when I spoke in front of audiences. Perform a self-assesement and ask those around you what they see as your main problem. No one person will be able to give you the full truth because their opinions are biased, but the sum of what’s between a few people you trust somewhere within lies the truth. If you have suffered for years I recommend consulting a professional and skipping over the self-help stuff. It’s just going to make you more anxious. But if overcoming panic is something you are seriously considering I tried these two programs with a good amount of success.
